Wellness is the proactive process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a more positive lifestyle. It is a state of optimal health and well being achieved through the active pursuit of good health and the removal of barriers to healthy living. Wellness is more than the absence of disease; it is the ability of people to reach their potential in the broader sense. It is a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being.
Wellness requires a strong effort to reach and a continual effort to maintain. The result, however, is the best possibility of good health - now and throughout life. Wellness can be defined through its four components.Fitness
Physical fitness programs improve overall employee health, reduce absenteeism, improve stamina, reduce fatigue and stress levels, and improve attitude and mental concentration. Physical fitness programs have a broad impact on various health-related and productivity factors, which make them a win-win situation.
Nutrition
The costs of poor nutrition and obesity may include absenteeism (with higher rates of physician visits and other medical care issues) and on-the-job productivity losses. It is also likely that poor nutritional habits reduce a person’s cognitive abilities and level of alertness. The goal is to help increase the efficiency of the system instead of clogging it up or depriving it of something critical. This is achieved by creating and maintaining a relationship with food that will maximize energy and help lose unwanted body fat and increase lean muscle.
Attitude
Research has conclusively shown that the way we think – our outlook – is a strong indicator of how well our cells function in warding off disease. Everyone experiences stress, both in personal and professional life. In fact, stress is essential to help people grow and adapt in a rapidly changing world. Psychologist Abraham Maslow described having optimal stress, which he called "eu-stress". Problems occur when a person experiences high levels of stress for long periods of time.
Professional Healthcare
Complementary Healthcare is an inclusive term that recognizes the interaction of many modalities in assisting an individual to wellness. It implies a holistic approach and is preferred to the term alternative, which creates a separation among healthcare modalities. Western allopathic medicine – conventional medicine holds a valuable place in the total spectrum of healthcare, especially for emergency situations and catastrophic illnesses, yet it lacks a holistic approach to healthcare. Most of the modalities in Complementary Healthcare use a holistic approach to healthcare which integrate with conventional medicine, and do not replace it. Holistic means treating the whole person – body, mind, emotion, energy and spirit. Treating only the physical body allows many of the unhealthy patterns to continue.
